Positive Politeness Strategies in the 2025 Grammy Awards Acceptance Speech

Abstract


The Grammy Awards is an annual event of American music industry. Award events are strongly related into award acceptance speech, which is performed by the winners of nominees in each category. Celebrities usually pay attention to the word choice in order to maintain their persona. This research focuses on how positive politeness strategies exist in award acceptance speeches. As a part of pragmatics, politeness strategies theory by Brown and Levinson (1987) was used to analyze the utterances in 2025 Grammy Awards acceptance speech. By using a qualitative descriptive approach, the data were described based on their sub-categories. The result of the study showed that the positive politeness strategies are generally found in the award acceptance speech. The use of politeness strategies gives the impression of humility and reduces arrogance. It found that the utterances are using several positive politeness strategies sub-categories.
