The Influence of Self-Selected Digital Media on Students’ Motivation in Learning English: A Qualitative Study

Nur Fadilah

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the types of self-selected digital media used by students and how these media influenced their motivation to learn English at Tadulako University. A qualitative descriptive study was conducted with 25 students who completed a questionnaire and five participants who took part in semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed that students used various self-selected digital media, including YouTube, TikTok, podcasts, movies, music applications, and language learning apps, to support their English learning. These media promoted learner autonomy, enhanced motivation, improved confidence, and supported the development of English skills. Although students encountered several challenges, they overcame them by using subtitles, replaying videos, and practicing regularly. Overall, self-selected digital media supported students' motivation and encouraged continuous English learning both inside and outside the classroom.
