The Effect of Canva Application on Vocational Students’ English Vocabulary Mastery

Abstract


Vocabulary is a key determinant of vocational high school students’ communication skills and job readiness, yet many still struggle to describe people in English because of limited mastery of descriptive adjectives and teacher-centered instruction. This study examined the effect of the Canva application on the English vocabulary mastery of tenth-grade Visual Communication Design students at SMK Negeri 5 Palu, a vocational context rarely addressed in previous Canva research. Using a one-group pre-test and post-test pre-experimental design, seventeen students completed a 20-item vocabulary test before and after a single Canva-based treatment session involving descriptive poster design. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, N-Gain, and a paired-samples t-test in SPSS 21. The mean score rose significantly from 9.59 to 15.24 (t(16) = -6.197, p < .001), with a medium N-Gain of 0.535. These findings indicate that Canva-based instruction significantly improves vocational students’ vocabulary mastery and supports its use as an engaging, visually driven vocabulary teaching medium.
