An Analysis of Students’ Competence in Applying Action Verbs in English Sentences
Abstract
This research aimed to analyse students’ competence toward action verbs. There are four to five forms of action verb in English. This was descriptive research. The research subject was 25 students of Primary School Teacher Education at 1st semester. The data were collected through Verbs Comprehension Test in five assessment indicators. The achievement point for each indicator: Verb Recognition 24.48, Verb Form Understanding 12.16, Subject-Verb Agreement 6.52, Tense Application 14.12, and Sentence Construction 2.31. This result showed their ability in applying action verb was still poor that they demonstrated limited understanding and frequently misuse verbs. Many errors in applying tense rules, particularly in the Present Perfect Tense 1.59 and Past Tense 1.70. The highest achievement was found in the Present Tense for Plural Subjects 3.05 and the Present Progressive Tense 2.76. Indicating the students were more familiar with verb 1 as a base form than other tense categories.
