Reduplication in the Short Story “Ikan Terbang Kufah” by Triyanto Triwikromo
Abstract
Reduplication is a highly productive morphological process in Indonesian, yet its stylistic function in the magical-realist short fiction of Triyanto Triwikromo remains unexplored, despite prior studies of reduplication in other Indonesian short stories, novels, and journalistic texts. This study aims to identify and describe the types and meanings of reduplication in the short story Ikan Terbang Kufah, published in Celeng Satu Celeng Semua (Gramedia Pustaka Utama, 2013). Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through the listening-and-note-taking technique and analyzed using reduplication theories from Chaer, Ramlan, and Kridalaksana. The analysis identified 33 reduplication data across four types: full reduplication (18), partial or phonemically altered reduplication (3), affixed reduplication (11), and dwipurwa reduplication (1). Full reduplication was the most dominant type, chiefly expressing plurality, habituality, and adverbial intensity, while affixed reduplication largely depicted repeated bodily movement that reinforces the story's mystical, coastal atmosphere.
